The pre-determined Super Bowl match that could not be averted.

I may not get much right in life but I was certain that we would be seeing a Patriots-Giants rematch in the Super Bowl. The popularity of Tom Brady and New York market was too alluring for Destiny to ignore. The NFL needed a marquee game to end a very poor season of football. It is the old magician’s trick where the show may have started out hostile, was very sloppy throughout, but, with a little sleight of hand, can end on a dramatic note and that is all the audience will remember as the curtains drop. Now, Destiny did get a lot of help from the officials and from role players.

Baltimore played a fantastic game against the Patriots and should have won. However, they chose the AFC Championship game to dust off Lee Evans. Evans has never been known as a clutch receiver and accumulated all of four receptions this year but, somehow, was the surprising “go to” receiver when the Ravens needed their biggest play. Truthfully, it worked as he was open. However, this catch would have equaled his season total for the day and his hands were too sore or were trembling too much to put much of a grip on the ball and a stunned, and badly beaten, Sterling Moore was alert enough to poke the ball out of Evans’ hands as easily as dusting crumbs off his lap. Sadly, the responsibility for tying the game fell on Billy Cundiff’s right foot. His foot has won as many big games as Evans’ hands. This game was too good to have ended this way and should have been concluded cleanly, but it further epitomizes the NFL of 2011.

The old mantra that Defense wins ballgames did not hold true for the 49ers. Their defense was spectacular especially since they were on the field for much of the day as the Niners’ offense mustered few drives of any length. The offense was able to get enough points on the board to win the game though. Unfortunately, their fill-in punt returner and the officials played against them too. Ted Ginn Jr. may not be much of a factor in most of the games he plays, but he seems to be a factor in big games when he is out with an injury. Too bad San Fran doesn’t make their fill-in returners take a simple football IQ test. I can think of two crucial questions that need to be answered correctly:

When returning kicks, do you run towards the punted ball when it is rolling quickly downfield or do you run away from the ball?

When carrying the ball, do you carry it with one arm wrapped around it away from the body or against the body? And, if carrying it after a crucial turnover, do you still carry it with one arm or two?

Too bad for Kyle Williams that the officials helped the Giants out at the end of regulation, helping to set the stage for Williams’ second miscue. Ahmad Bradshaw absolutely fumbled on his own 20 with two minutes left in the game. Many other times during the game did the officials left the ball carriers fight for extra yardage before blowing the whistle.

Truthfully, the game shouldn’t have come down to either play if Eli Manning’s horseshoe didn’t come into play on multiple occasions in the second half. That look of perpetual constipation on his face is due to that extra large, shiny hunk of metal shoved in a place that sun does not reach. San Fran decided that covering Victor Cruz with two guys in the second half versus the zero guys they had on him in the first half was a good idea. That plan worked as ol’ extremely overrated Eli kept firing the ball to Cruz, oblivious to the double coverage. But, every time he let loose a sure-fire interception, that horseshoe vibrated, but a slight smile on Eli’s face and caused the Niners defensive backs to turn into Moe and Curly and run into each other. Had the Three Stooges spiral not worked on at least one occasion, the Niners may have defied the NFL Network Gods and played their way into the Super Bowl.

A recap of the divisional playoff games and a fear of what may lie ahead for the Super Bowl.

Much is made every year about how difficult it is for the prior year’s Super Bowl winner to repeat. Of course, it is made with merit. Generally, teams get fat and lazy after they win the ring. Also, the winners generally lose a good handful of free agents as those players’ price tags tend to increase, sometimes dramatically, after reaching the pinnacle. It looked like the Packers were going to be the exception to the rule this year. They looked relatively unbeatable for 14 weeks. True, their defense was a bit porous, but their offense was so good that the defense was an afterthought. The “defense first” analysts are all crowing “I told you so” since they have long said that the defense would cost The Pack when the offense didn’t show up. Well, during the course of the regular season, they didn’t show up once. Last weekend, they never made it to the field after getting stuck at a Stop sign in week 17. Sure, Matt Flynn was unreal and threw for six TD passes. However, the offense revolves around Aaron Rodgers and he was far from crisp on Sunday. Granted, his receivers dropped a lot of passes, but that happens during every Green Bay game. What didn’t happen all year was that Rodgers missed wide open receivers. Say what you will about resting, but having your QB take two weeks off is not a proven formula for success.

Speaking of giving something a rest…please let Tim Tebow bow into the background until next season. Do the network heads really need to try to get him on the set for the AFC Championship pre-game? It is bad enough that we will have to stomach more ill-guided Eli love. Sadly, I can see the Giants beating San Fran and New England beating Baltimore. The hype for that Super Bowl rematch could very well be the perfect way to bookend this season. I was very uninterested in the NFL during the lockout and I will sure-as-hell be uninterested in a New England-New York rematch. David Tyree will be happy since he will get another 15 seconds, but no way can I stomach all the blind praise for Eli Manning. Ugh. Yes, I will be rooting very hard for San Fran this Sunday, but even after getting a +5 turnover performance, they still needed a last-second drive to win at home. That does not bode well against any team.

In addition to rooting for San Fran, I am still backing my Super Bowl pick this weekend; the Baltimore Ravens. I have always felt that they had the most complete team in the league. But, Joe Flacco needs to take advantage of a bad Patriots’ pass defense. Unfortunately, the Ravens have shown this year that they are not a fan of road games. If they are ever going to get out of the Steelers’ shadow and assume Top Dog status in their division, they must be able to win consistently on the road. No bigger step towards achieving that success than to win in Foxboro when it really counts. Lots of pressure on Flacco. I hope he handles it well.

Last weekend’s NFL games were as predictable as the BCS having controversy every year. New Orleans is too good, especially at home, to lose to the Lions. Cincinnati had not beaten a playoff team all year long. Atlanta simply cannot win in the playoffs, especially on the road and outside and Denver is led by The Chosen One.

New Orleans needed a bit of humbling to keep themselves focused on Indianapolis and not get too cocky. So, they invented ways to make the game interesting at half….much like a cat playing with a mouse. At halftime, they oiled up their machine and rolled over Detroit in the second half to make it a laugher. Cincinnati…oh, the Bengals. While they were a nice story this year, Andy Dalton has never played this many games in a season and wore down. Plus, their defense does not know how to step up and make big plays. See Chris Crocker’s drop of what would have been a momentum-changing INT (possibly for a TD). Soon after, Pacman Jones rolled out the red carpet for an easy TD to Andre’ Johnson to put the game away. I still don’t know why Pacman was on the field. Mayhem could have provided better coverage on that play. Also, how was Andre Johnson facing single coverage all day? Most of Houston’s fans can’t even name another receiver on their team.

Heading to New York for the Falcons matchup. Atlanta may have had the absolute worst offensive gameplan that I have ever seen. The Giants pass defense is horrific and Matt Ryan never put it to the test. Good thing they found out during the season, and then forgot in the playoffs, how valuable Julio Jones is to their offense. And the fourth-and-1 play calls?! Matt Ryan averaged just over 2 rushes per game this year and fumbles every 5 carries and you call his number at the most critical points in the game? Mike Smith should be fired for allowing those plays to be called. What about play-action? The Giants knew a run was coming. Maybe fake to Michael Turner and roll out to hit Tony G? Nah….too risky. The Falcons defense decided that if their coach wasn’t going to try, neither were they. After the last 4-and-1 failure, their entire linebacking corp and secondary formed one of those wedding dance corridors and let Hakeem Nicks watusi all the way to paydirt.

And then we head to Denver. This is two years in a row that a team gets home field advantage over a much more qualified team. In 2010, the NFC West should have been eliminated for playoff contention and the AFC West should have been this year. It is not fair to send a 12-4 team on the road versus a team that is break-even on the year or worse. Aside from that, you knew Divine Intervention was afoot when the Steelers started dropping like pants at an orgy. First Big Ben twisted his ankle up three weeks ago and was extremely limited coming into the game. Rashard Mendenhall tore up his knee last week and was done for the season. An unheralded safety, Ryan Clark, has a blood condition that is only dangerous at high altitudes. Come on! Witch Doctors couldn’t come up with a better Out than that! Because Clark was out, Ike Taylor has to man-up on his side of the field and was forced to take Denver’s only legitimate receiver, Demaryius Thomas, one-on-one. Thomas began lighting Taylor up from the opening kickoff. After James Harrison took out Eric Decker, Tebow only had one person to throw to and Pittsburgh refused to give Taylor the help he truly needed. I guess they threw in the Terrible Towel since they knew that they couldn’t fight Good.

A review of my 2011 NFL season projections

For the most part, our division winners weren’t too far off. We, like many others, figured that San Diego was still the class of the AFC West. We definitely did not give the Bengals a shot at beating all the crappy teams they faced this year. 9 wins versus teams out of the playoffs and 7 losses against teams in the playoffs. Guess that means they’ll be one-and-done, eh?

The shocker was how far the Rams fell without their starting QB and, even more shocking, of course, was the Colts’ fall from grace. I expected Peyton Manning back by week 5 when I made all my projections. That was a bad risk for my prognostications and for my fantasy football drafts. Ugh.

We had no business missing as badly as we did on Minnesota though. We knew it would be a tough year for projections and that was the one fact we did get right!

A recap of week 16 of the NFL season.

With the majority of fantasy football leagues coming to a conclusion last night, Tuesday is a very busy day in fantasyland. The Toilet Bowl participants are cutting checks for transaction fees, the playoff losers are looking at their losing game and wondering what they could have done differently and the champions are doing a lot of boasting, as well as anticipating a payday to help ring in the New Year. Fantasy studs, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers, sure closed out their fantasy years in style! Speaking of Rodgers, he has nothing to gain by playing this coming Sunday, which is why week 16 is the defacto end of the fantasy year. It would be a bitter pill to ride him all season long and then watch him play a quarter or a half in week 17 when you need him most. If you are in that situation, you need to have your Commissioner look into using an MFS league next year that utilizes Team QB positions or In-game changes. Either of those features helps balance the week 17 matchup moreso than having to turn to a bench QB.

For the first time in many years, I was on the outside looking in during championship week. Granted, I cut the number of leagues I play in down dramatically, but I really did not show up this year. My general apathy for the sport after the lockout weighed me down during the draft and guided me into some bad drafting decisions in each league. I picked Michael Vick in one league, Peyton Hillis in another, Chris Johnson in another. I gambled on Peyton Manning in another in way-too-high of a round. I found few Sleepers and made multiple bad starting position decisions. I had too many players at the same position that really didn’t separate themselves consistently and I would inevitably start the worst-performing group every week. Pathetic showing overall. I do expect to be recharged and more focused in 2012…at least that what my resolution says.

Hats off to Drew Brees on breaking Dan Marino’s season yardage total. While it is true that offenses pass more than they did in the past, watching Brees run the Saints’ offense leads you to believe that he would put up these numbers no matter what era he played in. His recognition of the defense and his accuracy do not get near as much press as the other top QBs, but it is awe-inspiring to watch. Kudos to a class act!

Flipping to the other side, what the hell is so compelling about these Air Jordan sneakers? Good Lord, did you see footage of these idiots breaking down doors and running over each other to spend $180 on a pair of shoes? It is hard to fault a company for overly inflating the price of an item when the demand is there or even keeping the inventories low so the lack of supply drives the price up even more, but take some responsibility when your product invokes chaos, even if it is from the dim-witted. Tack the desire for this item up in the “I Don’t Get It” column, between the love of Reality TV shows and the fawning over William and Kate. The world offers so much more, people!

Have a safe New Years weekend!

A review of NFL Week 15 and a preview of the last two weeks of the regular season.

I am not sure what Kyle Orton ever did to constantly be on the periphery of controversy, but he has rarely had a quiet NFL season. After getting the starting job in Chicago as a rookie, he QB’d a team that won a lot of games. His stats weren’t flashy, but you can attribute that to the handcuffs John Shoop’s offense put on Orton. Their defense was good enough to win games and Orton just needed to manage the game. He did that splendidly. However, his critics were abundant as the perceived better “pure QB”, Rex Grossman, was second-string and the Bears needed his pedigree to lead them to a Super Bowl. So, eventually, Orton was sent to the bench, Grossman guided the team to a Super Bowl loss, but Sexy Rexy wasn’t the answer either. So, Orton was sent to Denver in return for the Bears first “true” QB since Sid Luckman; Jay Cutler. If Cutler could have avoided untimely injuries the past two seasons, maybe that label sticks.

Orton arrives in Denver and gets the team of to a 6-2 starts, but eventually the team collapses under the weight of injuries and misses the playoffs. After age and injuries cost them many games last season and early this year, Orton sees the pine and The Gift, Tim Tebow, emerges. Now, I doubt that Orton would have put together the same run Tebow did, but he sure wasn’t the blame of the Broncos record. So, John Elway humanely lets Orton go. Much to my chagrin, KC claims him or my Bears would have and would still be in the playoff hunt. However, Orton was the last good backup the Bears have rostered and we paid the price for management’s ignorance. After finally getting the reins to the KC offense last week, Orton helped guide the rudderless Chiefs to an improbable victory over the destined-for-perfection Packers. Denver needs to lose at Buffalo and KC needs to beat Oakland to really crank the media machine into high gear for a Week 17 showdown in the Mile High City for a potential division championship. It would be fun…

But, after seven straight losses, it looks doubtful that Buffalo can muster up much of an effort against Denver this weekend. They are dropping like the 2002 NASDAQ and may need as long to recover. KC has a good shot against the Raiders. If it weren’t for their late 3-game skid, Oakland would be in the driver’s seat in this division. Of course, this is déjà vu for this division as San Diego, again, has made a late charge after playing like a turtle on its back for most of the season. However, they’ll need to go into early-season darling, the Lions’, den and pull out a W to retain a shot at taking the title based on what the Broncos do. This is all a might bit ugly, but, you have to enjoy the drama that the late NFL season can bring. I don’t have the time or the fortitude to even mention teams in the NFC East…..

Reflections on the NBA and a look ahead to the holiday football schedule.

I am running as late on article writing this week as I am on buying Christmas gifts and sending Christmas cards. At least my To-Do list is in perfect alignment. I know some of you are somehow happy about the NBA returning, but I think opening the season on Christmas day is the present equivalent of a lump of coal in my stocking….or a flaming bag of dog dooty on my front porch.

Though he will be a week early, I expect Santa to arrive in Oakland to deliver lots and lots of gifts during the Lions-Raiders game….all wrapped in yellow. This game may take so long to complete due to the penalties that it may lap the Monday Night game.

The best gift on Christmas is when Christmas lands on a Sunday. How sweet is it to have a full day of football to watch while the kids run around playing with their new toys? Even sweeter is New Years day. Not only do we have NFL all day to watch while we nurse our hangovers, but we get Monday off and get a full day of college football too. Even though the weather outside is frightful, 24 straight days of NFL and college football rules! If you don’t often watch college football, you need to turn on some of these upcoming games. Just flip on a game with a MAC team if you want to see lots of scoring. Tonight’s Ohio-Utah State game may sound boring on paper, but these teams will see the end zone often.

The Bears defense has to be livid with the offense’s performance the past few weeks. They have done everything they needed to do to get wins. As much as people want to blame Marion Barber and Caleb Hanie, I would look to the front office first since the Bears should have learned from the Todd Collins experiment last year that they need a talented, proven backup QB or two. Houston is winning with their third-string QB, as is Denver, and neither team’s defense is near as talented as Chicago’s. This season is shaping up for Bears’ fans to be as disappointing as a new NBA collective bargaining agreement.

Review of fantasy football players who were key in attaining fantasy football playoff berths.

Fantasy Football playoff time is here for a majority of us. It is a common practice nowadays to schedule your fantasy league’s championship game in week 16 versus week 17 to, hopefully, avoid having some of your studs benched in week 17 with their team’s playoff position already secured. While that may be true, normally stars will at least play a half to help stay sharp for their playoff run. We have recognized that at MFS and built in fantasy options to allow you to swap in players by half or quarter, thus allowing you to bench your starter when he sits and play his backup or another player at the same position. We also have the Team QB option which allows you to accumulate all points scored at the QB position for that team, no matter who is under center. Of course, these options also provide flexibility in case of an injury at any point during the year. Something to consider for next year, I tells ya.

If you were playing for a spot in your league’s playoff last week, many of the league’s top players definitely helped you out as the more reliable ones definitely came through. The dogs, such as Michael Vick and Peyton Hillis, performed as expected, though at least you knew Vick was on the shelf for the week so you didn’t need to kick yourself after another terrible performance by him. Of course, players like these most likely buried you in the standings long ago. The key to fantasy success is consistent, solid weeks of scoring production. Adrian Peterson may put up big numbers overall at the end of the year, but they tend come in bunches with many very-low scoring weeks mixed in. You don’t want a feast-or-famine category of player on your team since you never can predict the low point weeks.

Instead, get yourself players who produce predictable double-digit output on a weekly basis. Aaron Rodgers has put up over 20 points a week in standard scoring leagues. In all my years of years of playing fantasy football, I have never seen such a week-in and week-out assault. Those who were mocked for “reaching” for a QB in the first round are the owners laughing now. Drew Brees also performed admirably, putting up over 20 in all but 4 weeks. 4 weeks of mediocre-to-good production is far from a season-killer. I would take that from the number 1 pick in the draft and would be overjoyed if it was a pick anywhere after the first round. Speaking of the consensus top picks…they were pretty solid as well. Even though Arian Foster missed three weeks and shared the backfield for a lot of the season, he put up double-digits in every week but one after getting over his knee injury. Ray Rice had double digits in every week except when facing San Fran (no shock) and Jacksonville (I’ll never understand what the Ravens’ game plan was that night). The big surprise for many people with consistent production was from LeSean McCoy. With the Vick’s running and passing expectations, many analysts downgraded McCoy. Well, he danced his way to double-digit production every week. A damn impressive performance considering how the team played overall this year.

It is tough to get someone to throw in the towel on their first round draft picks, but, if you were able to wrestle Chris Johnson away at the midpoint of the season or later, you probably got a steal after he decided to perform; double digits in 4 of the last 5 games. If you kept him all season and benefitted from his late push, then you must have done well with low draft picks and early waiver wire acquisitions. As much as Rodgers carried some teams solo this year, a few productive Sleepers will you to the Promised Land. Players like Fred Jackson, Victor Cruz and Jordy Nelson did wonders for teams. I often avoid early-round QB picks since you can grab solid QBs in middle or later rounds, but rarely do you find one on the waiver wire that is one of the top point producers in the league. Kurt Warner comes to mind in his first season in St Louis, but no one else….until Cam Newton took the field. No one could have predicted his offensive success this year. Not only did he have solid passing numbers, but the rushing TDs were out of control. He has already broken the record for most rushing TDs in a season and has a few games left to put that baby out of reach for a long time. What I had to chuckle at was who the previous record-holder was. Vick, Randall Cunningham, Steve Young,…players that can run jump to mind first. I was floored when I found out that Steve Grogan was the long-time owner of the Rushing TDs by a QB record. One more time; Steve Grogan!

Observations from NFL Week 12

Week 12 went almost according to how it was scripted, with a couple of not-so-shocking differences, which means that most Confidence Pools had high-scoring teams across the board. This has been the norm, rather than the exception this year. The one area that I did see a radical change in was the amount of low-scoring games. It seems that the defenses have finally caught up with the offenses and are now causing more punts and field goals instead of touchdowns. Of course, the Giants would beg to differ with that assessment. I am sure that the reason for the high-scoring games earlier this year was due to the lack of conditioning due to the lock out, the lack of practice by the defense and the inability to disguise their coverages and the reliance on the passing game; almost across the board. When teams like Cleveland, Carolina and Tennessee are airing it out far more often than running the ball, you know change is a-foot. However, success in the NFL comes from mixing the play-calling up and controlling the clock. Those items, coupled with the weather getting bad, will force teams to rely more on the running game, which tends to bring the scoring down and field goals come faster than TDs. There were 12 field goals on Thanksgiving alone and another 48 on Sunday. There were some very happy fantasy owners who received far more points than expected from their last draft pick. A few other items of note from this past week:

DeSean Jackson needs a new financial advisor because getting benched for your play (or lack of) is not the key to a huge payday

Calling a reverse-side screen with a little-used QB in the Red Zone is the type of play that should remind people that Mike Martz is far from an offensive genius

Stevie Johnson made fun of Plaxico shooting himself in the leg once. He makes fun of Stevie Johnson numerous times per game by dropping critical passes

It seems like Jon Gruden had a personal mission on MNF to make sure that Eli Manning was praised as often as Drew Brees, if not more, but he went overboard. He was almost courting him. I think he needed to be toweled off after the telecast.

Fame is fleeting. Kevin Smith became the toast of Detroit when pulled off of the shelf after missing two years with injuries and putting a career game together, then gets hurt early the next game.

Fame may never come. Matt Leinart gets yet another chance to showcase any talent he may have and gets knocked out for the year before the half is over.

The coaching carousel is firing away; see ya Larry Coyer, see ya Jack Del Rio, better not hang Christmas lights just yet, Andy Reid

The Patriots are 3-TD favorites over Indy. DAMN, that is a lot of points. The oddsmakers went overboard three years ago and started jumping the Patriots’ lines over 20 points….they did not cover any of those games.

Speaking of lines for this week’s games, the Saints continue their aerial assault and bomb the Lions. The Niners shut St. Louis out, Cleveland covers against Baltimore and more than half the games go Under again, with Houston and Atlanta being a real snoozer.
